Refugee: ‘We are not used to cold snowy winter'

The Belarusian winter with freezing temperatures and snow has become a serious test for refugees. They are especially worried about children, one of the refugees living in the transport and logistics center told BelTA.

Refugees have been stranded at the Belarusian-Polish border for 51 days already. They are living in the temporary accommodation facility set up at the Bruzgi logistics hub near the border. At present, there are about 600 people there, 40% of them are women and children.

"The temperature is again below zero. There is snow, it is very cold. We are not used to such weather. Many of us worry about our children. They get sick sometimes. It is good, of course, that we have a roof over our heads. We are warm and provided with food and clothing, but these are not the best conditions for both adults and children. We want a better life, we want to get to Germany," the man said.

He asked reporters for the latest news. "Any information on our situation is very important for us. We were expecting good news during the Christmas holidays. We are still not losing hope," he noted. The people who are still staying in the transport and logistics center do not intend to go back to Iraq. Some cannot do it for safety reasons. Others have nothing left there to return to.
