Benyakoni border crossing reconstruction to complete in July
GRODNO, 30 March (BelTA) – The reconstruction of the Benyakoni international border checkpoint at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border is expected to complete in July 2010, BelTA learnt from Major Oleg Anatsky, head of the press service of the Lida board guard detachment.

The reconstruction was launched in December 2005. Four pathways have already been constructed. All necessary equipment for customs examination has been installed. The construction of service facilities (hotels, cafes, maintenance centers) is underway.

The crossing point is expected to accommodate up to 2,500 travelers, 350 trucks, 635 cars and 65 buses, twice as much (1120 travelers, 30 buses, 200 trucks and 550 cars). Thus, the checkpoint will provide services to up to 950,000 individuals, 130,000 trucks, 234,500 cars and 24,300 buses a year.

Minsk construction trust No 26 is a general contractor. The estimated cost of the project is Br20.7 billion. Last year over Br10 billion was put in the reconstruction.

Today the Benyakoni border checkpoint provides uninterrupted crossing for travelers and vehicles. Over 800 vehicles are registered per day. The crossing point is expected to apply a “one stop shop” principle with the use of red and green channels.

The Benyakoni border checkpoint was opened in spring 1993.
