China set to build up high-tech cooperation with Belarus
China intends to build up cooperation with Belarus in high technologies, Gao Lihun, First Secretary of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Belarus, told a scientific and practical seminar “International experience of operation of scientific and technological parks, technology transfer and innovation management” on December 13. The seminar takes place in Minsk on December 13-14. Belarus and China have a lot of common interests. >>>
Belarus scores first victory at IIHF U20 World Championship in Riga
Belarus defeated Hungary 3:2 in their first match at the IIHF U20 World Championship in Riga Division I. The Belarusians were dominating the game with 63-65 shots on goal. However the Hungarian goaltender Zoltan Hetenyi showed a very solid performance with 60 saves. Yury Eliseenko and Mikhail Stefanovich of Belarus both scored in the first period. Hungary equalized early in the third period. The game winner by Andrei Kolosov came late in the third period. >>>
Vet control reinforced at Belarusian-Polish border following bird flu outbreak
The Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry has reinforced veterinary control at the Belarusian-Polish border due to new outbreaks of bird flu in Poland, Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Mikhail Savelyev told BelTA. In his words, on December 3 Belarus banned import of live poultry, poultry meat and poultry meat products from Poland. Belarusian poultry factories have been prohibited to import young breeders from Poland. >>>
Sholeh Safavi-Hemami appointed new chief of UNHCR Office in Belarus
Ms Sholeh Safavi-Hemami from Iran has been appointed new chief of the UNHCR Office in Belarus, Ilya Todorovich, an outgoing chief of the UNHCR Office in Belarus, told a press conference on December 11. According to him, Ms Sholeh Safavi-Hemami is currently working in Jordan and is in charge of the UNHCR programmes in Iraq. Ms Sholeh Safavi-Hemami is expected to arrive in Belarus at the end of January next year. >>>
Belarus wins Junior Eurovision Song Contest
Alexey Zhigalkovich from Belarus won the 2007 Junior Eurovision Song Contest with the song S Druzyami (With Friends). The vote saw fierce competition between Belarus and Armenia. The Armenian Arevik group took a lead at first but the gap between Belarus and Armenia was narrowing fast in the second part of the voting. By awarding 12 points to Belarus, Lithuania cemented the victory for our country. >>>
Council of Republic approves ratification of Belarusian-Italian agreement on children’s recuperation holidays
The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus has approved the ratification of the intergovernmental Belarusian-Italian agreement stipulating terms and conditions of children’s recuperation holidays in Italy. The document was signed in May this year in Minsk, chairman of the permanent commission for international affairs and national security of the upper house of the Belarusian Parliament Nikolai Cherginets reminded. >>>

The Belarusian economy suffered no shock as energy prices almost doubled, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus /NASB/ Mikhail Myasnikovich said in Minsk on December 6 during a scientific seminar. “The country successfully passed through that period and performance of the economic sector in 2007 is a testimony to this fact. The conditions will be even more dreadful in 2008 and 2009 and economic entities should realise that,” Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed. >>>
Products of 215 Belarusian companies to be presented in Caracas
Products of 215 Belarusian companies will be displayed in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, Yuri Lositsky, the deputy chairman of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told BelTA. A great number of guests including other countries of Latin America – Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua - are expected to attend the exhibition of Belarusian goods in Caracas. Latin-American companies have already shown their interest in Belarusian heavy-duty equipment, buses, tractors, refrigerators and TV sets. >>>
Six companies of Belarus’ food industry to partake in exhibition in Venezuela
Six companies of Belarus’ Ministry of Agriculture and Foodstuffs will take part in the national exhibition of the Republic of Belarus in Venezuela, which will be held in Caracas on December 7-9, BelTA learnt from the office for international cooperation with foreign countries of the head department of foreign economic activity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Foodstuffs. Among these companies is Bereza Meat-Packing Plant, Lepel and Glubokoye concentrated milk factories. >>>
Belarus and Venezuela develop 5 construction projects
Belarus and Venezuela are developing five projects dealing with the construction and town-planning. An agreement on the bilateral cooperation in the construction sphere will be signed in Belarus’ Ministry of Architecture and Construction, BelTA learnt from Marco Cardoso, the aide of the Deputy Minister of Housing Construction of Venezuela. The document is expected to be signed in the near future. In line with the bilateral agreements the Belarusian side will take part in the construction projects in Venezuela. >>>
