| In the quarterfinals of the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts Victoria Azarenko from Belarus registered a difficult victory 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 over Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. On the way to the semifinals the Belarusian beat Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-2, 6-3 and Ukraine’s Yuliana Fedak 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinals Victoria Azarenka will play her doubles partner Shahar Peer of Israel. The Belarusian-Israel duo won the first match against Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva and Ukrainian Tatiana Perebijnis 6-2, 6-2 and lost to the Chinese Zi Yan and Jie zheng 6-4, 3-6, 10-12. >>> |
| On December 27, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will take part in the New Year charity event Our Children, BelTA learnt from the presidential press service.
More than 2300 children aged 8-14 years old from all over Belarus were invited to take part in the New Year celebration.
Taking part in the event will be orphans, children from large families and also students – the winners of international and national contests, festivals and sports competitions. >>> |
| Belarus has obtained the Russian state credit of $1.5 billion. The resources have been put into a dollar account of the Finance Ministry of Belarus in the National Bank, BelTA learnt from the Finance Ministry of Belarus.
The credit has been provided for 15 years with the payments postponed by five years. Libor interest rate is determined for three-month US dollar deposits plus the margin of 0.75% per annum. >>> |
| Belarus and China are interested in promoting the trade and economic cooperation. The statement to this effect was made in Beijing during a regular round of consultations between the foreign ministries of the Republic of Belarus and the People’s Republic of China, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Belarus Andrei Popov told a briefing on December 20.

| New member states of the Schengen zone include Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Malta.
Today the states parties to the Schengen Agreement include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
The date for lifting internal border control for land and sea-borders is December 21, 2007 and for air borders - – March 30, 2008. >>> |
| In line with President’s Decree #643 signed on December 17, the stamps that are put in Belarusian passports to allow their owners to leave the country will be annulled starting January 1, 2008, BelTA learnt from the presidential press service.
In such a way, the passport of the citizen of the Republic of Belarus will be valid for temporal travels abroad without permission stamps.
The document provides for setting up a common database listing citizens, whose right to leave the country is temporarily restricted. >>> |
| Belarus and Finland are going to sign an intergovernmental agreement on avoidance of double taxation and prevention of tax evasion. The signing ceremony will take place in the Foreign Ministry of Belarus on December 18, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian foreign political department.
The document will be signed by Anna Deiko, the Belarusian Minister for Taxes and Duties, and Timo Lahelma, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Finland to the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Belarus on concurrent. >>> |
| Belarus is prepared for talks with Russia on all issues, Belarusian Head of State Alexander Lukashenko said during a face-to-face meeting with President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
According to yesterday’s agreement with Vladimir Putin, first there will be a one-to-one meeting, and then a session of the Union State Supreme State Council which will consider 12 issues. “We will do this work in a prompt manner and settle all the issues,” Alexander Lukashenko said. >>> |
| During a meeting with representatives of the Vilnius City Hall, Belarusian Ambassador to Lithuania Vladimir Drazhin proposed to admeasure a site to construct a centre of Belarusian culture in the Lithuanian capital. In its turn, the Belarusians proposes to give 10-15 acres of land for the needs of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission in Minsk, BelTA learnt in the Belarusian Embassy in Vilnius.
